I arrived at Saul’s Saloon and Grill in Wynberg as the Community Chest Carnival was happening, so the noise  from the street was really loud but not exactly the fault of the restaurant. All in all, the visit was an absolute pleasure.

Our waitress was extremely helpful, even organising a special treat for my friend, whose birthday we were celebrating. After our meal, my friend received an enormous iced muffin decorated with chocolate sauce. Not that she had any space to put the muffin, as the meals are a very generous size.

I had a “medium” chicken burger (200g) with pepper sauce and my friends had medium beef burgers with cheese sauce and monkey gland sauce respectively. Chips are ordered separately so we ordered a medium-size. I’m not sure how those burgers were squeezed into 200g, they seemed more like 500g burgers! The portion sizes were incredible, and those were all medium! We couldn’t finish the chips, and the birthday girl took home half of her burger and her birthday muffin, perfect for lunch the next day.

We sat outside as my two companions were smokers, and the terrace had a great atmosphere. The indoor area is non-smoking and is decorated with 50’s icons with has fire-engine red booths, or four massive couches to sit on. There is also a bar in a separate room where smoking is allowed.

I was really impressed with the Wynberg branch of Saul’s Saloon and Grill. If you’re looking for simple food, Saul’s is your place: they have burgers, steaks, ribs, surf and turf, salads, pizzas and more, and their prices are very reasonable for what you get. Just make sure you get the kiddies size if you’re not hungry enough to eat a horse!
